Executive Summary

Summarize (not to exceed 150 words) the purpose, objectives, and accomplishments of your waste reduction program.

Program Statement

In a concise format (not to exceed 1,000 words), please describe your waste reduction program and indicate why your program should be awarded statewide recognition. Please describe the following, as applicable.

Sustainable Waste Reduction Practices (Maximum of 10 points)

  • Efforts to integrate sound environmental values into management decisions, practices, and policies.
  • Examples of exemplary waste reduction programs.
  • How your program serves as a model of sustainable practices in industry/sector/business.
  • The incorporation of sustainable management and operations.

Methods and Results (Maximum of 10 points)

  • How the program goals and objectives were developed.
  • How the program’s effectiveness was determined.
  • The measurable (quantify) results of this program.

Transferability (Maximum of 5 points)

  • How others can easily implement the program.
  • How the project can be transferred to others.

Environmental/Resource Conservation Impact (Maximum of 5 points)

  • How the program has long-lasting and sustainable impact (one time only effort or on-going?).
  • How the program demonstrates waste reduction, reuse, recycle, compost and buy recycled.
  • The magnitude of positive environmental impact relative to the projects goals and objectives.

Environmental Justice (Maximum of 5 points)

  • How the program raises community awareness of environmental issues in low-income or urban renewal areas.
  • How the program builds local, grassroots or community leadership or stewardship to address environmental issues.

Economic Progress (Maximum of 5 points)

  • How the program has enhanced California’s economy or understanding the linkage of the environment and the economy.
  • How the program has created new or better jobs, developed new markets, etc.

Innovation and/or Uniqueness (Maximum of 5 points)

  • How the program has gone from basic practice to unique and innovative practices.
  • How the program has approached problems in an entirely different manner (paradigm shift).
  • How the program has demonstrated a “pioneer” spirit, (e.g. out in front before its time; ahead of the marketplace).

Waste Reduction/Pollution Prevention (Maximum of 5 points)

  • How the program has achieved measurable reductions in the generation of waste or pollutants.
  • How the program has increased public/private awareness of pollution prevention.
  • How the program has served as a waste reduction or pollution prevention best practices model.
  • Business has a clear environmental record (no violations or pending enforcement action).

Other Information

The supplemental application could take as long as two hours to complete. To expedite the supplemental application process, we recommend you have your information prepared before beginning.

  • Optional--You may submit supporting materials: Materials which may be included are graphic presentations, brochures, photos, newspaper articles, videotapes, etc. There is no limitation on the submission of supporting materials; however these materials may not be used as a substitute for the above written statements.
  • External References: Include with your application two letters of recommendation of the program being nominated. References must be current, knowledgeable and familiar with this nomination. External endorsements must be specific and include contact information.
