Venues and Events: Reducing Waste
Financing Resources
CIWMB Grants and Loans
Most of the CIWMB grant and loan funds are provided directly to the host city or county who then has discretion, within limits, on how they are expended. Contact your local jurisdiction recycling coordinator for more information on how local uses are determined. Find your local government recycling coordinator contact by choosing the appropriate county, selecting the "submit" button, choosing your jurisdiction from the list, and then selecting the "contacts" tab.
- Reuse Assistance Grants. This grant program provides incentives for local public agencies to promote and apply the concept of reuse to their business communities.
- Sustainable Building Grants. Provides local jurisdiction funding for projects that advance the use of "green" or sustainable building design and construction practices in California.
- Used Oil Grants. Several different grant programs are available which assist local jurisdictions, nonprofit entities, and other parties with activities that encourage recycling of used oil and filters.
Other Grants and Loans
- Governor's Office for Innovation: Get Grants is a portal that enables Californians to access information on grant funds available from State agencies. Get Grants allows users to find grant sources through a single search without needing to know the name of the agency or department administering the grant.
- California Department of Conservation: The Division of Recycling (DOC) web site provides grant information, including information on competitive grants and county payment programs for beverage container recycling and litter cleanup activities.
- City and County of San Francisco: The Department of the Environment offers local Solid Waste Prevention and Recycling Grants to increase waste diversion in San Francisco. Venue facilities have been awarded grants in past years. For profit applicants may only participate as a subcontractor to a non-profit agency.
- Federal Grants: The Federal government now has a single, comprehensive Web site that contains information about finding and applying for all federal grant programs. More than 800 grant programs in all 26 federal grant-making agencies are now listed at www.grants.gov. This site provides information in a standardized format across agencies, includes a "Final Grant Opportunities" feature to help search for potential funding sources, and an "Apply for Grants" feature that greatly simplifies the application process.
More Funding Resources
- Recycling Refund. If your venue operations generate used motor or lubricating oil, you can register to receive 16 cents per gallon when you properly recycle your oil.
- Sale of Recyclables. The City of San Diego uses its community centers to collect recyclables. In 2002, they raised $75,000.
- Volunteers. Some jurisdictions have made clean-ups of public venues sites into community pride events. For example, Santa Cruz County coordinates with an environmental group and more than 1,500 volunteers to annually clean up and recycle their beach waste.
