Barstow Waste Management and Environmental Purchasing Policy

Business and Noninstructional Operations BP 3511.1

The Governing Board recognizes the need to manage resources efficiently and cost effectively. The integrated waste management principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are consistent with principles of good management and environmental stewardship. Source reduction and recycling are necessary to reduce the impact on the environment.

The purpose of this policy is to support the purchase of recycled and environmentally preferable products in order to minimize environmental impacts relating to our work. The Barstow Unified School District recognizes our employees can make a difference in favor of environmental quality. The District prefers the purchase of environmentally preferable products whenever they perform satisfactorily and are available at a reasonably competitive price.

District staff should serve as positive role models to students and the community concerning conservation issues.

The Superintendent or designee will implement a comprehensive and integrated waste management program that will include:

  1. Reducing District waste amounts by waste prevention practices such as double sided copying, e-mail, electronic ordering, and electronic filing.

  2. Recycling of District used materials such as corrugated cardboard, white and mixed paper, aluminum, glass cans, plastic and metal containers and landscape trimming.

  3. Reusing and recycling of construction and demolition materials to the greatest extent possible.

  4. Purchasing of products containing the highest amount of post-consumer material practicable.

  5. Assessing annually of each department’s effectiveness in applying this policy.

The Superintendent shall adopt school and departmental procedures that implement and support this integrated waste management and conservation of resources program.

Barstow Unified School District Policy adopted on September 13, 2001 in Barstow, California.
