The following jurisdictions received grants to promote the concept of reuse.

Long Beach, City of ($50,000.00)

Description of project: The City of Long Beach has partnered with Food Finders, Inc., a local nonprofit organization that specializes in the reuse of food, to expand their operations in Long Beach. Food Finders accepts donations of food from local markets, restaurants, and large venues and donates the food to homeless shelters, senior centers, and other needy organizations. Since Long Beach is the fifth largest City in California, there is an abundance of food in Long Beach that can be salvaged. Long Beach is the sixth highest City in the nation in terms of adult poverty and third in the nation in child poverty (2005 U.S. Census Bureau Report), so the reuse of food through Food Finders will help those that are impoverished throughout the City of Long Beach. Approximately 1.5 million pounds of food will be reused through this project each year, which equals 3.21 million meals, and enough food to feed 1,465 people 3 meals per day for 2 years.

Los Angeles, City of ($50,000.00)

Description of project: The City of Los Angeles will partner with the ReUse People to develop a reuse facility for construction and demolition materials in the City of Los Angeles. A component of the project will be to encourage deconstruction practices in the City resulting in the careful disassembly of structures to maximize the reuse of the component materials. The project will meet the important goals of diverting materials away from the City’s scarce landfill space, providing a convenient reuse center to City residents and businesses, educating the public on the value and practices of reuse, and targeting an important waste sector for the City. This project will result in the local reuse of over 2,000 tons of material per year.

Sonoma County Waste Management Agency ($50,000.00)

Description of project: This project proposes to relocate and significantly expand Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County’s ReStore by moving it to a 9,000 square foot permanent location in Santa Rosa’s historic Railroad Square. Materials to be reused by this project include: appliances, cabinets, doors, drywall, electrical fixtures, furniture, hardware, lumber, plumbing fixtures, roofing, tile and windows. Funding from this grant would help pay for staffing to run the ReStore, warehouse equipment, retail space rent and publicity. A conservative estimate would be that this project will increase reuse by 50 percent or 120 tons annually.

Torrance, City of ($49,700.00)

Description of project: The proposed reuse project will develop a sustainable system of reuse between Torrance manufacturers and Torrance public and private elementary schools by collecting cast-off materials from factories and then cleaning, sorting, storing and finally re-distributing them to schools for educational purposes. The comprehensive program, Trash for Teaching, will have three parts: (1) Collection of cast off materials from Torrance manufacturers, (2) educator development workshops focused on the educational and environmental value of reusing discarded materials in the classroom, and (3) delivery of these clean, safe, and unique cast-off materials to Torrance school children, teachers, and administrators for classroom use. Deliveries will be made in a truck that operates on biodiesel fuel made from used vegetable oil. It is estimated that 68 tons of material and vegetable oil will be reused in the proposed project.

West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Authority ($50,000.00)

Description of project: The West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Authority seeks to partner with "This & That" to increase the amount of construction and demolition material that they are able to reuse by increasing their material throughput and promoting awareness of This & That as both an outlet and source for used building materials. Because This & That is currently the only reuse opportunity for construction and demolition material in West Contra Costa County, the authority believes that This & That’s success is integral to increasing regional diversion of this material. Material throughout will be increased through the purchase of two pieces of equipment, a gooseneck trailer and a prehanging door line machine. This equipment will allow This & That to increase the amount of material they can salvage and will improve material sales and turnaround time. The authority expects that a targeted outreach campaign will further assist This & That in capitalizing on these improvements to reuse more building materials in the long term. Through this project, the amount of materials reused will increase by 25 percent or 60 tons annually.
