Reuse Assistance Grants Fiscal Year 2004/2005 Grant Recipients |

At its May 11-12, 2004 meeting, the Board approved agenda item # 26 that addressed the scoring criteria and evaluation process for the Reuse Assistance Grants for fiscal year 2004/2005. At its December 14-15, 2004 meeting, the Board approved staff's recommendation to award grants from the Fiscal Year 2004/2005 funds. The application period ran from August 5, 2004 through October 29, 2004. The Board received a total of 32 applications and approved six for funding from fiscal year 2004/2005 funds, totaling $250,000.
The following jurisdictions received grants to promote the concept of reuse. Chico, City of ($50,000.00)Description of project: Promoting and improving the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. Additionally, increasing reuse in the City of Chico and surrounding communities by increasing advertising and education, reorganizing the Re-Store, and purchasing rack and bin material, and a flat bed truck with lift gate. The County is benefiting from increased diversion and the reuse of materials. View the City of Chico's first grant progress report.
El Dorado County ($49,102.00)Description of project: El Dorado County Environmental Management, in partnership with El Dorado County Habitat for Humanity, is implementing a material acquisition unit for purpose of collection of reusable construction and demolition (C&D) materials from construction projects throughout the County. Reusable materials are sold at the Re-Store in Placerville. View El Dorado County's first or second grant progress reports.
Modesto, City of ($50,000.00)Description of project: Partnering with the Habitat for Habitat for Humanity Stanislaus (HFHS) to promote their fledging Re-Store, a retail home improvement store that sells donated construction items and materials at discounted rates. Grant funds will conduct a public education campaign, purchase an additional truck, purchase additional store shelving and hire a full-time staff person to collect donations. HFHS will continue to seek out additional community partnerships to further enhance their donation sources. View the City of Modesto's first grant progress report.
Riverside County ($1,178.00)Description of project: Funding will enable Riverside County Waste Management Department to open, promote, and operate a Materials Reuse Store at Lamb Canyon Landfill. Grant monies will fund the cost of the crane company to move the existing storage buildings at the landfill and to fund a portion of the project's printing costs. A storage containment (two 40-foot shipping containers) and a scale to track diversion will be purchased. Additionally, the County will provide printing costs as part of the matching contribution. San Mateo County ($50,000.00)Description of project: The County and Goodwill Industries E REUSE is establishing permanent collection and distribution system for reusing and recycling electronic equipment. E REUSE venture is partnering with the County's Vocational Rehabilitation Services to implement a workforce training program to provide developmentally disabled individuals transitional employment opportunities to collect, separate, test, and store reusable computer equipment that will be made available at low or no cost to nonprofits and community agencies, schools, and needy individuals and families. Stockton, City of ($49,720.00)Description of project: Partnering with Habitat for Humanity of San Joaquin County's Re-Store program and provide a creative solution to recapture and reuse C&D materials to meet the AB939 mandate. View the City of Stockton's first grant progress report.
