OverviewScroungers' Center for Reusable Art Parts (SCRAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to stimulating environmental awareness and creativity in children and adults by reusing materials that traditionally have been discarded as waste. This is accomplished by maximizing the diversion of materials from the solid waste stream, collecting and redistributing these materials to educational organizations and the general public and educating school children and the public in the art of creative reuse. The recipients of SCRAP's materials include schools, daycare centers, museums, homeless shelters, senior citizen groups, neighborhood centers, theater groups, summer camps, and many other nonprofit groups. These organizations turn the materials they receive from SCRAP into paintings, sculptures, and other works of art. OperationsSCRAP operates a 4,700 square foot warehouse space full of materials to stimulate the imagination and promote the art of creative reuse. They work with the San Francisco Department of the Environment to provide 25 field trips per school year to San Francisco school children, teaching about the materials they use everyday, what happens to them when they are discarded, and how them can be creatively reused. They also hold Saturday workshops throughout the year (about 24 total) teaching various craft techniques using the materials found at SCRAP and provide hands-on activities at community event SCRAP receives support from the San Francisco Department of the Environment and the San Francisco Unified School District.
