Vision
MECCA is a nonprofit organization that envisions Lane County as a place where the arts and conservation are part
of everyday life, and where convenient and low-cost opportunities for both are
abound.
Mission
MECCA provides affordable arts education to the Lane County community through
hands-on opportunities for creative reuse and artistic expression.
Goals
-
Education: Provide affordable art opportunities to citizens of all ages.
-
Waste Reduction: Emphasize reuse and conservation of materials.
-
Affordable Materials: Provide affordable art materials to schools, groups, and
individuals.
-
Materials Exchange: Develop a centralized clearinghouse for reusable scrap
materials. Cooperate with local businesses to collect reusable scrap materials
and distribute to the public.
Programs
MECCA is a community-supported, nonprofit organization operated with the help of
volunteers. They offer the following programs benefiting the citizens of Lane
County:
- Scrap Art Workshops for private parties and for the public, at their
facility or yours. This is a time when people make their own crafts with
assistance from MECCA staff. Projects include: paper making, bookbinding,
sculpture, mask-making, paper mache, picture frames, tables, lamps, chairs,
shirts, mosaics, magnets, candles, fabric dying, batik, and more.
- Public Art Program designing and producing public art projects.
Youth and adults will work together to create a large project such as a
mosaic, sculpture, mural, or other public art.
- Alternative Education Arts Program: Working with the Oregon
Department of Education and local school districts, MECCA will host an
alternative education arts program for middle and high school youth.
Students will earn school credit and participate in a variety of arts
disciplines. Academic skills will be taught through direct hands-on
applications, and focused around an art-based curriculum.
- Materials Exchange for reusable scrap materials and art supplies.
Reusable scrap materials are collected from businesses and provided at low
cost to the public. Educators, artists, youth groups, senior centers,
children, and families have access to the materials for educational and
artistic purposes.
- Other Community Services include studio space for individual
artists, art openings for local and upcoming artists, sales of youth
artwork, and teacher training for youth art projects.
