Furniture for Families

Overview

Furniture for Families (FFF) is a community based, nonprofit, all volunteer, privately supported, free furniture bank dedicated to providing good, usable furniture to those in need.

As a furniture bank, they solicit and pick up good, serviceable used furniture (no stained or damaged pieces) on an appointment basis from the El Dorado Hills, Folsom, and Rancho Cordova areas. The furniture is stored at their facility for distribution, free of charge to their clients.

FFF was selected as "Community Resource of the Year, 2003" by Alta California Regional Center, a ten county agency, providing service to clients with developmental disabilities.

History

While volunteering at Twin Lakes Food Bank, Director Jan Voy learned that many of their clients have needs other than food and clothing. One family had a new baby and no crib. Another had a fourteen-year-old daughter who was sleeping on the floor because she had no bed.

Some families are homeless and finally get a place to live, but have no furniture. Battered women frequently find themselves finally out of their violent environment, but with seemingly no way to furnish a home.

Beds, tables and chairs, dressers, sofas, and cribs can be the beginning of a new life with self-respect. Basic furnishings can turn a shelter into a home, providing comfort and security.

At the same time, many more fortunate families have quality furniture that they no longer need and would welcome a way to put it to good use.

Sleep Train donates new mattress sets and Tiechert Foundation has underwritten their furniture donation trucks.

Operations

All clients must be screened by a local approved service agency. Clients are sponsored by a caseworker from a social service agency familiar with the specific needs of the client. FFF provides the furniture to the client by appointment.

The goal of FFF is to redistribute safe, clean, functional furniture in a professional, dignified manner, from those who want to share to those who are truly in need, free of charge.

FFF is always looking for help in the following areas:

  • Furniture donations;
  • Car, truck, or boat donations;
  • Cash donations for operational expenses; and
  • Volunteers to help with furniture pick-ups and general office work.

Materials Accepted

All furniture must be in good working condition. The following is needed:

  • Beds and Bed frames
  • Clean Sheets, Blankets, Bedspreads
  • Coffee/End Tables
  • Cribs
  • Dressers
  • Night Stands
  • Sofas
  • Tables and Chairs

They cannot accept:

  • Appliances
  • Blinds
  • Cabinetry
  • Curtains
  • Desks
  • Exercise Equipment
  • King Size Beds/Mattresses
  • Recliners
  • Sectionals
  • Sleeper Sofas
  • Stereos
  • Televisions
  • Torn, Soiled, or Broken Items
  • Waterbeds

Collection Service

FFF picks up furniture each week on an appointment basis from the El Dorado Hills, Folsom, and Rancho Cordova areas.

Geographic Service Area

FFF provides a collection service to only the El Dorado Hills, Folsom, and Rancho Cordova areas, but serves clients in the greater Sacramento area.

Days/Hours of Operation

FFF picks up furniture each week within their area. They distribute furniture to six to eight needy families each week (over half of their clients are children).
