Project Description
The City of Santa Barbara used their grant funds to conduct a Reuse
Campaign to promote and increase reuse in the Santa Barbara community. The
Campaign targeted the entire community to receive education about reuse as a
waste diversion method. Grant funding established public information
to bring the community together around the concept of reuse. By educating
the community about the wide array of local reuse programs, from food to
computers to sporting goods, the number of people contributing to and
benefiting from those programs increased.
The steps required to accomplish their project are as follows:
Task 1: Reuse Campaign — Conduct Planning Meetings.
The City of Santa Barbara Solid Waste Specialist and the Art From Scrap (AFS)
Director conducted all planning meetings to complete all aspects of the
project.
Task 2: Reuse Logo.
The Reuse logo has been designed and approved by the CIWMB and is being used
in the City of Santa Barbara Reuse Web page, the reuse ads, the Art From
Scrap ads, the Art From Scrap brochure, and will be used in the Reuse video,
AFS's PSAs and in a variety of other venues. It will continue to be used as
new opportunities arise.
Task 3: Local Reuse Organizations Research Businesses and
Organizations.
Local reuse businesses were identified and information about the businesses
is included in the City's reuse Web site and the Reuse Guide.
Task 4: Reuse Ads.
Three Reuse ads were designed and ran in the Independent a total of
three times each. The ads were less expensive than the original bid and the
money was reallocated to run two ads in the Family Life magazine.
Task 5: Art From Scrap Ads.
Three Art From Scrap ads were designed and ran in the Independent a total of
three times. The ads also ran in Family Life magazine twice with money that
was reallocated from a savings on the Reuse ads.
Task 6: City TV Reuse Video.
City TV produced a 25 minute Reuse Video (Reuse It!) that aired on
City TV 18. A press release with details of the video was created.
Task 7: Art From Scrap PSAs.
Art From Scrap promotional PSAs for radio and TV were produced and
distributed to the local media. The PSAs will run on an "as available"
basis, since the City did not budget money to pay for their airing. Local
media runs free PSAs often and repetitively.
Task 8: Santa Barbara Reuse Web Page.
The City of Santa Barbara Reuse Web page is completed and active at
www.sbrecycles.com.
The Reuse Web page was promoted in the Reuse ads and in the Earth Day Reuse
Booth ad.
Task 9: Art From Scrap Brochure.
The Art From Scrap brochure has been completed and is being distributed in a
variety of venues. Due to the change in distribution by the City (discussed
in Task 10), fewer brochures were printed than proposed. The remaining money
was used to run additional ads in the local newspapers to promote the Reuse
Campaign.
Task 10: Distribute AFS Brochures Through City of Santa Barbara Utility
Bills.
The City was unable to distribute through the utility bills due to a change
in policy. The AFS brochures are being distributed at the AFS store, at
local community events, at City of Santa Barbara events, and at the
Community Environmental Council. It will continue to be distributed through
a variety of other venues as appropriate over time.
Task 11: Business Reuse Information Packet Planning.
A Business Reuse Information Packet was sent to the reuse
businesses listed on the City of Santa Barbara's Web site. The packet
contained signage identifying the business as a supporter of Santa Barbara
Reuse and also included a Reuse Directory developed by the City of Santa
Barbara for Earth Day. Printing of the signage was paid for with funds
remaining from the printing of the Art From Scrap brochure.
Task 12: AFS Reuse Display.
The Art From Scrap reuse display is complete and is in use. The reuse
materials are complete and are being distributed to teachers on an ongoing
basis.
Task 13: Conduct Training Meetings for Staff to
Implement Business Donation Solicitation Process.
All aspects of identifying, contacting, interviewing, developing
relationships, and implementing the pick-up of materials have been
completed. Maintenance of the database and pick-ups of donated material are
continuing on an ongoing basis.
Task 14: Reuse Open House — Planning Sessions.
The venue for the Reuse Open House was changed from Art From Scrap to the
Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival, in order to reach a larger audience
(several thousand attendees). A display was developed with information about
local Reuse businesses and opportunities, samples of reusable items (such as
packaging peanuts), and a drawing for a used surfboard and wetsuit was held.
Money from the original Reuse Web page ad was combined with the Reuse Open
House ad to create and place a full page, color reuse ad in the
Independent and the SB News Press.
Task 15: Track Tasks for AFS and Report to City.
All information and budget information regarding the grant progress for AFS
tasks have been reported to the City of Santa Barbara for inclusion in the
three progress reports and the final report. Financial information and staff
hours have also been compiled and submitted. The City of Santa Barbara has
completed progress reports and invoices for the CIWMB for all grant periods
including the final report.
*Permission was obtained from grant recipient to publish project profile.
