Project Description
The City of Santa Barbara used their grant funds to conduct a Reuse
Campaign to promote and increase reuse in the Santa Barbara community. The
Campaign targeted the entire community to receive education about reuse as a
waste diversion method. Grant funding established public information
to bring the community together around the concept of reuse. By educating
the community about the wide array of local reuse programs, from food to
computers to sporting goods, the number of people contributing to and
benefiting from those programs increased.
The steps required to accomplish their project are as follows:
Task 1: Reuse Campaign — Conduct Planning Meetings.
Three planning meetings have been held with the City of Santa Barbara Solid
Waste Specialist and the Art From Scrap director to review the scope of the
project and plan the initial steps to be taken. The Reuse Campaign entails a
variety of activities that will need planning as the project unfolds.
Additional planning meetings will be held as they move through the various
aspects of the project. Task 1 is 50 percent complete.
Task 2.1: Reuse Logo Meeting with Graphic Designer Regarding "Logo"
Concept.
A concept meeting was held with the graphic designer to communicate the
scope and intent of the project and brainstorm possible logo ideas. The
graphic designer was given a listing of local reuse businesses and reuse
information from the CIWMB Web site to help him understand what the logo
will represent. Task 2.1 is 100 percent complete.
Task 2.2: Develop Reuse Logo.
The graphic designer developed a variety of potential logos for the Reuse
Campaign. Ten logo versions were circulated by the Art From Scrap director
for general reactions and feedback from City of Santa Barbara, Community
Environmental Council, and Art From Scrap staff, as well as from other
people in the community. Task 2.2 is 100 percent complete.
Task 2.3: Concept Review Meeting for Reuse Logo.
A logo review meeting was held with the graphic designer to discuss the
feedback received and to agree on two versions of the logo to refine. Uses
of the logo were discussed again to help the graphic designer visualize the
logo in some specific contexts. Task 2.3 is 100 percent complete.
Task 2.4: Design Revisions for Reuse Logo.
The graphic designer finalized the logo for inclusion in all aspects of the
Reuse Campaign. Task 2.4 is 100 percent complete.
Task 2.5: Meeting to Approve Reuse Logo.
The final reuse logo has been approved. Task 2.5 is 100 percent complete.
Task 3.1: Local Reuse Organizations Research Businesses and
Organizations.

the City of Santa Barbara that collect and/or sell some type of reused
materials. Types of materials include antiques, books, clothing, baby
equipment, architectural materials, computers, eyeglasses, furniture,
lighting fixtures, magazines, mattresses, packing materials, records,
surfboards, sporting goods, marine salvage, toner cartridges, and tires.
The list is incorporated in the City of Santa Barbara's Reuse Web site. Task 3.1 is
100 percent complete.
Task 3.2: Local Reuse Organizations Develop Information Gathering Form.
A spreadsheet has been developed to track each reuse business identified in
Task 3.1. Information to be gathered includes name of business, type of
material, address, phone number, e-mail address, website, business owner,
contact person, interest in participating in Santa Barbara Reuse Campaign,
and other information. Task 3.2 is 100 percent complete.
Task 3.3: Local Reuse Organizations Contact Organizations and Gather
Information.
Phone numbers and addresses for each business have been recorded and
incorporated into the list for inclusion in the City of Santa Barbara's
Reuse Web site. Task 3.3 is 100 percent complete.
Task 4 (Subtasks 4.1-4.6): Reuse Ads.
All meetings and processes have been completed in the design and

have been approved by the CIWMB. Tasks 4.1-4.6 are 100 percent complete.
Tasks 4.7-4.12:
The City of Santa Barbara's Reuse Web site is still in process and since
that Web address is an important aspect of each ad, the ads will not be
placed until that site is completed and up. Tasks 4.7-4.12 have not yet been
started.
Task 5 (All Subtasks): Art From Scrap Ads.
One meeting has taken place between the AFS director and the graphic

additional reuse ads (which will promote the Reuse Web site). Tasks 8.3-8.5
have not yet been started.
Task 8.6:

another out of durable rubber, plastic fork and metal fork). Task 12.2 is 100 percent complete.
Task 12.3: Create New Displays.
AFS staff created a new educational display to be used when students come on
