Reuse Assistance Grant Progress Report

City of Oakland's Reuse Assistance Grant Project
(Part 2: December 1, 2003 to December 1, 2004)

Project Description

The City of Oakland was to use their grant funds to initiate an Educational Marketing Outreach Program. This program had the following goals: 1) Increase the diversion of reusable lumber from the C&D waste stream; 2) Increase the amount of salvaged lumber reused; and, 3) Educate C&D waste generators (such as building contractors and architects) and the general public about the need to increase the reuse of lumber currently disposed of as C&D waste.

The steps required to accomplish their project are as follows:

The City of Oakland has communicated to the CIWMB that they are having difficulty implementing their grant project, as their original partner, Community Woodworks, closed its doors in March of 2004.

Following the closure of Community Woodworks, the City's initial plan was to circulate a "mini-RFP" to other Oakland reuse organizations, soliciting proposals to take over the Community Woodworks' grant and implement appropriate reuse activities. More specifically, the City had planned to distribute the RFP, field and screen the responses, and administer the agreement with the chosen partner organization(s).

In mid-October 2004, Alameda County Waste Management Agency and the City began to consider the idea of the Alameda County Habitat for Humanity ReStore assuming the Community Woodworks grant.

The City is still determining the options of utilizing the grant funds before the end of the grant term.
