Project Description
The City of Lomita, in partnership with the cities of Rancho Palos Verdes, Torrance, Lakewood, and Redondo Beach,
expanded an
existing program to provide services to the South Bay area of Los Angeles
County. This diverted edible food not sold at restaurants, food courts,
hotels, hospitals, and other establishments, and provided it to the nonprofit Food Finders,
who allocated the food to organizations that help meet
the nutritional needs of displaced, indigent, or impoverished persons. Food
Finders collected and distributed food along with other essential items to
missions, shelters, treatment centers, senior centers, children's homes, etc. in
both Los Angeles and Orange Counties at no cost to recipients.
The steps required to accomplish their project are as follows:
Task 1: Secure a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Food Finders.

The MOU between the five partnering cities and Food Finders has been adopted
by all parties. However, the signature page was individualize by each entity. As
individual signature pages were not mentioned in the MOU, the attorneys said it
was not valid. They prepared a group signature page that meets with the
attorneys' approval, and the final signatures are now completed. Copies have
been distributed to all parties. Task 1 is 100 percent complete.
Task 2: Coordinate Photo Shoots for Ads & Brochures. (6/15/01 to
6/25/01)
Task 2 has not yet been started.
Task 3: Develop Database for Direct Mail Piece. (6/15/01 to 6/15/01)
Each city has submitted to Food Finders a printout of their food service
businesses. Food Finders staff has been using this information for its contact
and outreach to businesses. Task 3 is 90 percent complete.
Task 4: Design Promotional Brochure. (6/25/01 to 6/30/01)
The promotional brochure has been approved by the CIWMB and printing is
underway. Task 4 is 100 percent complete.
Task 5: Produce Photos for Ads & Brochures. (6/26/01 to 7/10/01)
Task 5 has not yet been started.
Task 5.1: Print Brochure. (7/11/01 to 7/15/01)
As noted in Task 4, printing has just begun. Task 5.1 has not yet been started.
Task 6: Print Promotions in Newsletters and Newspaper. (7/15/01 to
5/1/03)
The City of Redondo Beach placed an article on the program in their internal
city newsletter and in the spring issue of their city newsletter. The City of Torrance solicited an article in the Daily Breeze on the
grant program and Food Finders organization for Earth Day. It ran on the front
page of the Sunday, April 21, 2002 edition. Task 6 is 50 percent complete.
Task 7: Prioritize & Meet with Food Vendors & Recruit Volunteers.

Food Finders has been working on Task 7. Task 7 is 50 percent complete.
Task 8: Compile Information into Categories for Diversion Calculation

Task 9: Procure Direct Mail Envelopes. (12/14/01 to 12/28/01)
Task 9 has not yet been started.
Task 10: Hire Full-Time Equivalent Staff/Purchase Food Handling
Equipment/Purchase Computer. (6/15/01 to 6/25/01);
Staff has already been hired; a computer was donated through Rancho Palos
Verdes and several containers were purchased through Food Finders during the
last reporting period. Task 10 is 50 percent complete.
Task 11: Collect Edible Food. (6/15/01 to 5/1/03)

Food Finders staff did several presentations during this reporting period:
- Torrance—November 11, 2001, Middle School Leadership Conference.
Operated booth on community service opportunities.
- Lakewood—April 16, 2002, Soroptimist Club. Food Finders honored
for community service. During the acceptance speech, their current program
was described.
- Rancho Palos Verdes—April 17, 2002, Rancho Palos Verdes High School.
Booth at volunteer fair.
- Redondo Beach—April 20, 2002, Earth Day Celebration. Booth at fair.

Task 16: Compile Report to Donors Relating to Pounds of Food Collected.

Ideas for Next Reporting Period:
- Printing of new business cards for new staff person in charge of business
contact.
- Development of "pocket-size" or mini brochure.
- Development of Food Finders "rolodex" card for businesses.
- Increased City participation in program promotion.
- Development of a decal for participating businesses to display in windows.
- Brochure printing and distribution.
