Recycletown's Grand Re-Opening and Earth Day Celebration (www.garbage.org)—Petaluma
This event is free and open to the public. Guests can tour Recycletown's reuse areas and visit the new Education Center, that was funded by the CIWMB and features reclaimed lumber flooring and wainscoting, second-hand tile floor, and a bottle wall. Artists can bring their favorite recycled art pieces to display. A silent auction, live music, and refreshments will also be offered.

11th Annual Trash to Treasures Junk-Art Competition and Exhibition
—Alameda County
Trash to Treasures is an annual junk-art (art made from found, scrounged, or reused materials) competition and exhibition presented by the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse. Professional and amateur artists of all ages, who reside within Alameda County, are invited to create artwork using discarded or reused materials and to compete for prizes.

11th Annual "Stamp Out Hunger"—National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive
(www.nalc.org/)—Nationwide
This largest food drive in the nation helps food banks stay well stocked during the summer months, when donations of food are usually at their lowest. Mail carriers around the county participate by picking up non-perishable food that residents leave by their mailboxes.

E-Cycle Event

Industrial Surplus Foundation (ISF) is collecting old computers and electronics in partnership with Central Contra Costa Waste Authority. The working units will be redistributed to schools and nonprofit organizations. Volunteers are needed to sort, evaluate, and move. Technical experience is a plus but not required.

The city estimates that between 500 and 600 households will register to be included on the city's list of sales. There is no registration fee and participants keep all profits from their sales. As a result of donations from the 2002 event, Food for Bay Area Families donated 150,000 pounds of food and $15,000 to Bay Area food banks. Food will be collected at the following locations:

  • In San Francisco: 3132 Clement Street
  • In Santa Clara: 3705 El Camino Real

The Food Banks need these items the most:

  • 100 percent fruit juices
  • Beans, pasta, rice
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Canned tuna, fish, meat
  • Cereal, oatmeal
  • Peanut butter
  • Soups, stews, and "meals in a can"
