Keeping Green Landscapers Guide

Introduction to Landscape Waste Prevention

The information contained in this guide is intended to assist you, who install and care for California’s landscapes, to achieve two equally important goals. One is to participate in your community’s waste reduction efforts by doing all you can to cut your own waste and the waste you help create through your business or landscaping activities. The other is to save you time and money and, as a business, you know the value of that.

This guide will focus on reducing yard waste—how to prevent it and what to do with it. Ideas and activities called xeriscaping, grasscycling, mulching, and composting will be discussed. Also, the practice of using materials and products made from recycled resources will be described and we will show how this practice can benefit you while helping the environment. Finally, a listing of informational resources is provided so that you can continue building your waste reduction knowledge, saving money, and assisting your community.

While there is much useful information here, more is available and easy to access. This guide will point out those resources when and where it can,  and a little extra legwork on your part will pay dividends. One of the first things to do is contact your city or county waste reduction coordinator, often affiliated with the public works or planning department, to find out about local programs.
