Bay Delta Grasscycling Outreach Campaign

Contra Costa, Napa, and Solano Counties

The CIWMB provided $90,200 in 1999 and $110,000 in 2000 to fund grasscycling outreach campaigns in the San Francisco Bay Area. The region, consisting of the Counties of Contra Costa, Napa, and Solano, partnered with the Association of Bay Area Governments to develop educational and promotional materials and implement a series of outreach activities designed to increase homeowners’ and residents’ awareness of grasscycling and divert thousands of tons of grass clippings from landfills in 1999. (see 1999 Bay Delta Grasscycling Outreach Campaign.)

Goals

  • Expose 90 percent of the households (384,000) in the region to the needs and benefits of grasscycling.
  • Raise awareness among 50 percent of the households (213,000) in the region to the needs and benefits of grasscycling.
  • Encourage and assist 5 percent of the households (21,300) in the region to initiate the practice of grasscycling.

Grasscycling was promoted throughout the region via newspaper advertisements and articles, billing inserts, radio Public Service Announcements, cable television, electric mulching mower rebates, and at a variety of community outreach events. Residents traded in their polluting gas-powered mowers and purchased at a discount over 1,700 cordless, electric rechargeable, mulching mowers during the two-year campaign. These new mulching mowers will divert over 255 tons of grass clippings from landfills per year and reduce air emissions by over 15 tons per year.
