California Geographical Areas

Bay Area

The Bay Area Region consists of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma Counties. There are 82 jurisdictions in the Bay Area Region, including five Board-approved regional agencies: Contra Costa/Ironhouse/Oakley Regional Agency; Marin County Hazardous and Solid Waste Management Authority; Sonoma County Waste Management Agency; Upper Valley Waste Management Agency; and West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Authority.

Central Coast

The Central Coast Region consists of Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz Counties. There are 28 jurisdictions in the Central Coast Region, including three Board-approved regional agencies: San Benito County Integrated Waste Management Regional Agency,  San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority and the Santa Barbara County Regional Integrated Waste Management Reporting Authority.

Central Valley North

The Central Valley North Region consists of Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Placer, Sacramento, Shasta, Sutter, Tehama, Yolo, and Yuba Counties. There are 27 jurisdictions in the Central Valley North Region, including seven Board-approved regional agencies: Butte Regional Waste Management Authority; Colusa County Regional Agency; Glenn County Waste Management Regional Agency; Sacramento County/City of Citrus Heights Regional Agency; Shasta County Waste Management Agency; Tehama County Sanitary Landfill Regional Agency; and Yuba/Sutter Regional Waste Management Authority.

Central Valley South

The Central Valley South Region consists of Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Tulare Counties. There are 46 jurisdictions in the Central Valley South Region, including four Board-approved regional agencies: Kings Waste and Recycling Authority;  Merced County Solid Waste Regional Agency, Stanislaus County Regional Solid Waste Planning Agency, and Consolidated Waste Management Authority of Tulare County.

There is one transformation (waste-to-energy) facility in the region which is located in Stanislaus County (Ogden Martin Systems of Stanislaus, Inc.).

Coastal North

The Coastal North Region consists of Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, and Mendocino Counties. There are 17 jurisdictions, including Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority, the only Board-approved regional agency in the Coastal North Region.

Mountain North

The Mountain North Region consists of Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Plumas, Sierra, Siskiyou, and Trinity Counties. There are 12 jurisdictions in the region, including three Board-approved regional agencies: Lassen Regional Agency; Sierra County Regional Agency; and Siskiyou County Integrated Solid Waste Management Regional Agency.

Mountain South

The Mountain South Region consists of Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Inyo, Mariposa, Mono, and Tuolumne Counties. There are 13 jurisdictions in the region, including three Board-approved regional agencies: Amador County Regional Waste Management Authority; Calaveras County Regional Agency; and Inyo Regional Waste Management Agency.

Southern California Coastal

The Southern California Coastal Region consists of Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, and Ventura Counties. There are 141 jurisdictions in the region, and one Board-approved regional agency, the Los Angeles Area Integrated Waste Management Authority.

There are two transformation (waste-to-energy) facilities in the region, both located in Los Angeles County: Commerce Refuse-To-Energy Facility and South East Resource Recovery Facility.

Southern California Inland

The Southern California Inland Region consists of Imperial, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties. There are 58 jurisdictions in the region, and no Board-approved regional agencies.
