In-Depth Information on 53 Municipal Solid Waste Landfills

To determine the effectiveness of California’s municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill regulations, in-depth information on the 53 MSW landfills listed below was gathered under Task 4 of the California Integrated Waste Management Board’s cross-media Landfill Facility Compliance Study. The information was obtained to better understand MSW landfills’ noncompliance issues and to determine whether they are related to current regulations. The contractor for the study, GeoSyntec, Inc., gathered the information from landfill owners/operators and regulators from December 2003 through May 2004. The 53 landfills consist of 40 MSW landfills selected from the database of 224 landfills developed for Task 2, as well as 13 selected MSW landfills that closed, or, in the case of three landfills, ceased to accept waste, prior to 1993. For additional information, please see the background.

Landfills Closed Prior to October 9, 1993

Landfills Not Closed Prior to October 9, 1993

The information provided for each of the 53 landfills does not represent verbatim quotations of persons, companies, or agencies that were interviewed by the contractor. Rather, it reflects the contractor’s summary of the interviewee’s comments. As such, the information provided is not intended for any use or purpose other than the context of this report.
