California Design Enterprises, Inc., Committed to Recycling and the Environment

California Design Enterprises manufactures candles and wax products in Sylmar, California. We conduct business all over the country and often have large amounts of surplus materials, especially wax and candles. The manufacturing process sometimes generates large amounts of surplus paraffin wax-about 47,000 pounds every year-in excellent condition for recycling.

We were facing a huge storage dilemma. Tossing it away seemed very wasteful to us, so we decided to find a recycling solution.

The boss made a bet with me that I would never find anyone to take all this wax. I decided to take that bet and sat down at my computer to begin my search on the Web. After some perseverance and good fortune, I found the CalMAX program.

After a brief orientation over the phone, I was able to place an ad in CalMAX. To my amazement, the ad quickly led to a number of new business connections for us. Literally within hours of the posting, I began to receive a steady stream of phone calls.

Within two days, I received numerous calls from people who wanted to take the wax. I was pleasantly surprised at how fast our company was able to succeed using the CalMAX program-and that I won the bet with the boss.

We started listing with CalMAX just about one month ago and have made excellent contacts for the leftover paraffin wax.

In addition to the wax, we also have more than 6,000 glass building blocks that we once used as oil lamps. Again, it was surplus material for which we had no use.

To my amazement, I saw an article in a back issue of the CalMAX catalogue about a company in Oakland that recycles glass into art and various glass vases. We made the contact through CalMAX and we are now negotiating the method of transporting the glass blocks.

After working online with the program and speaking with the CalMAX staff, I have since found a great resource for placing reusable material that we did not want wasted or sent to the landfill. I think CalMAX is a fantastic service.
