Coordinator Update Winter 2004

Coordinator Update

by Diana Rivera

I went to see the Sandhill cranes a few days ago. They are wintering in the Central Valley. I spent a few hours of a cold, misty, evening watching their elegant beauty, their surreal quality in flight; like an undulating wedge gliding down for a nights rest. They are wondrous to watch.

Standing out there in the wetlands I thought, I wish I were a poet so I could describe the cranes and the beautiful scene. Then I could paint a picture for your mind’s eye. But then, after watching them for a while I thought, well, I’m not a poet but it sure is good to be an environmentalist—isn’t it!

CalMAX Catalog
CalMAX is committed to helping our customers find opportunity through environmentally preferable resource management. As the State faces ongoing fiscal challenges, we find our own modest operating resources to be ever more thinly stretched. We intend to do everything we can to keep CalMAX running smoothly, offering unimpeded access to material exchange information so that you, the users of the program, can take fullest advantage of the opportunities that exist. Regardless of whether we will be able to continue printing the CalMAX quarterly catalog, you can rest assured that the information you rely on will continue to be available through the Web at www.calmax.org.

In this Issue
On the inside cover of this catalog we have an advertisement for the 5th Annual Recycled Product Trade Show. This year’s show is scheduled for March 10 and 11, 2004, at the Sacramento Convention Center. This is a great event and we hope to see you there.

CalMAX staffer Maggie Coulter has contributed an article concerning sustainability titled "Waste Not, Want Not." The article is about small, organic farmers and their sustainability practices.

In the Creative Reuse feature, Sarah Weimer writes about an innovative, hands-on Discovery Science Center for children in Lake County.

Our guest article is from Victor Aguirre, Director of the ProMAX materials exchange in Santa Cruz. Our congratulations go out to everyone at Ecology Action and ProMAX for receiving the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for its innovative programs. The award acknowledges 34 years of work with communities throughout the region.

In the Electronics Update article, Terri Cronin discusses the new legislation established to help increase electronic waste recycling.

Finally, the insert section of the catalog contains reprinted pieces from CIWMB fact sheets, which are also available online at our Green Building site.
