In the Winter 2005 edition of CalMAX, we have a number of articles about reuse and recycling efforts in the Arcata area. Arcata is located along the northern California coast, in Humboldt County. The first of these articles is about the Arcata Community Recycling Center. There are additional articles in the insert section of the catalog. We like to feature these types of articles, so that we can share with our readers the variety of models or methods that communities use to divert materials from the waste stream. To assist the diversion efforts in the region, CalMAX also has a web portal for Humboldt and Del Norte Counties called NorthCoastMAX. Please see www.ciwmb.ca.gov/CalMAX/NorthCoastMax. The Marin County Department of Public Works has a new materials exchange website, www.MarinMax.org. Fashioned in the style of CalMAX, the website offers local businesses a free materials exchange resource to help divert materials from the landfills. Marin County has begun an advertisement campaign, running stories in local newspapers and developing brochures that will target local businesses. In the creative reuse feature, Sarah Weimer has a story about reusing wooden barrels. There are a number of web links with her story, which will take you to additional resources. In the electronics update article, Terri Persons discusses a number of significant changes to electronic waste issues. Remember, the Board’s website includes an electronic product directory with more than 300 listings of collection facilities (www.ciwmb.ca.gov/Electronics/Collection/). |
