Environment Matters

A comprehensive listing of all current CIWMB publications is available at our online publications catalog. The catalog includes a section for school-related publications, some of which are highlighted below. Most publications can be viewed online or downloaded, and all can be ordered by email or by calling your Office of Education and the Environment regional contact.

Curriculum and Standards

  • Closing the Loop: A 50-lesson, integrated waste management curriculum targeting K-6 students. Closing the Loop is distributed free to teachers who attend teacher training workshops. (Pub. #322-99-009) Audience: Educators/School Districts/Local Government/Private Industry.
  • Closing the Loop Sampler: This free publication contains five lessons from the full Closing the Loop curriculum. A great resource for a week of lessons to recognize Earth Day in April or for use any time of the year. (Pub. #322-00-014) Audience: Educators/School Districts/Local Government/Private Industry.
  • Closing the Loop Correlations to California Content Standards: Six different correlation documents are available that correlate each CTL lesson to the State's standards by grade level, subject, and activity. (Pub. #'s 322-00-015; -016; -017; -018; -019; -020) Audience: Educators.
  • Compendium for Integrated Waste Management and Used Oil: A compilation of the results of an evaluation of integrated waste management curricula collected nationwide. (Pub. #502-93-001) Audience: Educators/School Districts/Local Government.
  • Earth Resources--A Case Study: Oil Sampler: A complimentary one-lesson sampler from the complete Earth Resources A Case Study: Oil curriculum for grades 6-12. The publication also includes the complete Introduction Section and Appendix A. (Pub. #322-00-003) Audience: Educators/School Districts/Local Government.
  • Project Learning Tree: Municipal Solid Waste Module: This module contains eight lessons and is designed for educators teaching 7th through 12th grades. The focus is on current solid waste dilemmas and helps the students realize that they can create a positive change in their community and environment. Through interesting hands-on activities, students will have the opportunity to learn by using critical thinking and decision-making skills. For more information contact your regional representative.   • Project Learning Tree: Municipal Solid Waste Module Correlations to California Content Standards: Six different correlation documents are available that correlate each PLT: MSW lesson to the State's standards by grade level, subject, and activity. (Pub. #'s 322-00-021; -022; -023; -024; -025; -026) Audience: Educators.
  • The Worm Guide: A Vermicomposting Guide for Teachers: A vermicomposting guide geared toward starting and maintaining a classroom worm bin. Worm bin building plans, troubleshooting tips, and new classroom activities make this guide a useful tool for teachers. (Replaces our previous publication--Worms, Worms, and Even More Worms.)

School District Waste Reduction

The following publications have been developed to promote school district waste reduction program implementation. You may receive a copy by ordering online or contacting your Local Assistance and Market Development regional contact.

  • A District-Wide Approach to Recycling--A Guide for School Districts: A comprehensive how-to guide in establishing school district recycling programs. (Pub. #500-94-009) Audience: School Districts/Local Government/Private Industry.
  • Going Beyond Recycling, Buy Recycled--A Guide for School Districts: A guide describing various ways a school district can buy products made of recycled content. (Pub. #322-95-001) Audience: School Districts/Local Government/Private Industry.
  • Report on the CIWMB School District Diversion Project: Report describing the California Integrated Waste Management Board's School District Diversion Project (June 2000-November 2001), initiated in response to legislation. The project's key objectives were to (1) develop a model methodology enabling school districts to achieve maximum waste reduction, (2) identify factors essential to institutionalizing waste reduction programs in school districts, and (3) strengthen the support provided to school districts by local jurisdictions and the CIWMB. (Pub. #310-02-008)
  • $eeing Green Through Waste Prevention--A Guide for School Districts: A how-to guide illustrating waste prevention practices that school districts have found effective in reducing waste and cutting costs. (Pub. #500-94-010) Audience: School Districts/Local Government/Private industry.

School DEEL Publications

The CIWMB also developed several publications as part of the School Diversion and Environmental Education Law ("School DEEL"). These documents pertain to:

  • On-campus case studies of service-learning projects related to integrated waste management and energy, air, and water resources.
  • A sample campus needs assessment that helps teachers create an instructional unit merging environmental service-learning with academic study.
  • A resource manual offering general background information on issues related to integrated waste management, energy and air resources, and water resources.
  • Sample audits that give sixth-grade students the chance to collect and analyze data on their school's use of resources.
  • A sample plan offering investigations and classroom lesson plans that examine past and present use of natural resources. The plan, which features a fictional school, is based on a compilation of real experiences gleaned from the School DEEL program.
