Sampler: A complimentary one-lesson
sampler from the complete Earth Resources A Case Study: Oil
curriculum for grades 6-12. The publication also includes the

- Project Learning Tree:
Municipal Solid Waste Module: This module
contains eight lessons and is designed for educators teaching 7th through
12th grades. The focus is on current solid waste dilemmas and helps the
students realize that they can create a positive change in their community
and environment. Through interesting hands-on activities, students will

- The Worm Guide: A Vermicomposting Guide for Teachers: A vermicomposting guide geared toward starting and maintaining a classroom
worm bin. Worm bin building plans, troubleshooting tips, and new classroom
activities make this guide a useful tool for teachers. (Replaces our

- Report on the
CIWMB School District Diversion Project: Report describing
the California Integrated Waste Management Board's School
District Diversion Project (June 2000-November 2001), initiated in
response to legislation. The project's key objectives were to (1)
develop a model methodology enabling school districts to achieve maximum
waste reduction, (2) identify factors essential to institutionalizing
waste reduction programs in school districts, and (3) strengthen the
support provided to school districts by local jurisdictions and the
CIWMB. (Pub. #310-02-008)
- $eeing Green Through Waste Prevention--A Guide for School
Districts: A how-to guide illustrating waste prevention practices
that school districts have found effective in reducing waste and cutting
costs. (Pub. #500-94-010) Audience: School Districts/Local
Government/Private industry.
The CIWMB also developed several publications as part of the School Diversion and Environmental Education Law ("School DEEL"). These documents pertain to:
- On-campus case studies of service-learning projects related to
integrated waste management and energy, air, and water resources.
- A sample campus needs assessment that helps teachers create an
instructional unit merging environmental service-learning with
academic study.
- A resource manual offering general background information on
issues related to integrated waste management, energy and air
resources, and water resources.
- Sample audits that give sixth-grade students the chance to
collect and analyze data on their school's use of resources.
- A sample plan offering investigations and classroom lesson plans
that examine past and present use of natural resources. The plan,
which features a fictional school, is based on a compilation of real
experiences gleaned from the School DEEL program.
