NewsRMDZ News, 1997-99The RMDZ News was published (in print and electronically) three times a year from 1997 through 1999 for zone administrators and other interested parties. It has been replaced by the e-mail newsletter described in the first paragraph above.
RMDZ Jobs Through Recycling Wins U.S. EPA's Environmental Achievement AwardOur 1998 Jobs Through Recycling (JTR 98) grant project was selected by U.S. EPA's Region 9 to receive a 2004 Environmental Achievement Award. Each year, the U.S. EPA "celebrates and recognizes outstanding environmental advocates who have made significant contributions toward enhancing and protecting the quality of our environment." Out of 150 projects considered for this award, our project was one of 35 that were selected to receive the honor. The goal of JTR 98 was to demonstrate the environmental and economic benefits of establishing regional markets for locally generated waste. The project brought together the economic development and recycling communities in Alameda County to establish regional markets for recovered recyclable materials. The project exceeded its goals in accounting for more than 140,000 tons per year of recyclable materials being diverted from landfills; created more than 100 jobs; assisted with starting or expanding nine businesses; and resulted in more than $10 million in capital outlay.
