Board Member Mulé hands out bags and goodwill at recycle event. CIWMB Board Member Rosalie Mulé helped distribute reusable grocery bags to San Diego residents that brought their old and worn out electronic waste to the consumer electronics recycling event in Miramar, Calif. Nov. 15, 2008. The event was sponsored by Sony Electronics, Waste Management and E-World Recyclers of Vista, Calif. 1,615 cars came through the lines and dropped off nearly 150,000 pounds of electronic materials of all kinds. San Diego Community College District hosted the event and provided more than 40 volunteers who greeted residents, removed the electronics from their cars, did the paperwork and thanked them for doing their part for the environment. All the material collected, filling 11 semi-truck trailers, will be diverted from landfills and reused or recycled.

Board Chair Brown Helps Celebrate New State-of-the-Art Recycling Center. CIWMB Board Chair Margo Reid Brown presented a proclamation to Mary Garaventa at the grand opening celebration of the Mt. Diablo Recycling Center in Pittsburg, Calif. Nov 13, 2008. The 90,000 square foot facility is the newest and largest facility in Northern California and is capable of diverting more than 9,000 tons of solid waste from California landfills each year. The center is a single stream recycling process, residential and commercial customers can place all of their recyclable materials, paper, cans and bottle into one large container and the center will sort, classify, compact, bundle and transport all the materials to their next steps. Chair Brings CIWMB Message to International Audience. Board Chair Margo Reid Brown spoke before a group at the 2008 Rubber Recycling Symposium in Vancouver, British Columbia on October 29, 2008. Chair Brown spoke on how California has undertaken aggressive programs to clear waste tire dump sites and promote increased recycling of scrap tires. Her California story provided this international audience with a perspective of the state's commitment to expand recycling and reuse, promote alternative energy sources, and combat the effects of climate change.

Agua Mansa Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility Opening. Under a clear Southern California sky, a large crowd was on hand Oct. 29, 2008 for the dedication of Riverside County's new Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center. California Integrated Waste Management Board Member Rosalie Mulé, County Supervisor John Tavaglione (left side in photo), and General Manager Hans Kernkamp cut the ribbon to formally open the facility. "Residents of Riverside County should rightly be proud of this new center. You now have a state-of-the-art recycling facility to bring used motor oil, aerosol cans, paint, and sharps and household medical waste," said Mulé. "The Board, and I, thank you for making the effort to get this facility built and operational." The center will be open on Saturdays and can process about 200 cars per day. Environmental Empowerment through Education at the Women's Conference, October 21-22, 2008. Fancy gold tire gauges and chocolate-brown and green reusable bags were all the rage at the Maria Shriver Women's Conference last Tuesday and Wednesday in Long Beach, California. Tuesday night, "Night at the Village," CIWMB staff handed out gold tire gauges to conference attendees as a reminder that keeping their tires inflated prolonged their use. Fewer tires used means fewer tire fires, fewer tires in landfills, and fewer tires that need to go through the costly business of recycling. Wednesday was devoted to educating conference attendees on the benefits of reusable grocery bags as an alternative to paper or plastic, which are harmful to the environment. Attendees were encouraged to "never be without a bag" by the gift of a reusable bag that compacts into a tiny "stuff bag" which fits easily into purses and attaches to key chains.

Geysers Road Repair: On Thursday, October 16, 2008, Board Member Wesley Chesbro and several CIWMB engineers were on hand to recognize the innovative construction efforts being implemented to repair and stabilize a section of landslide-damaged Geysers Road in Sonoma County using over 1,500 of waste tire scraps. These tire scraps, also known as Tire-Derived Aggregate (TDA), have proven to be both a highly effective engineering tool in several Board-funded projects, as well as an excellent way to divert thousands of waste tires from landfills and tire stockpiles. On June 19, 2008, Chair Margo Reid Brown and Member Rosalie Mulé visited the City of Roseville and the recently opened Expanded Polystyrene Collection Program facility. Since its launch in November of 2007, Roseville has collected and diverted over 14.5 tons of this material, approximately 1,000 pounds per month. Brown and Mulé toured the facility and watched as they collected clean, white EPS molded packing foam from local manufacturers, retailers, and residents from 5 drop-off sites located within the city boundary. Roseville is partnering with manufactures in the area to take the material collected and remanufacture it into durable goods. Angora Fire One-Year Anniversary: Chair Margo Reid Brown addressed a group of invited guests at the Angora Fire Anniversary Lunch to thank them for all their work and cooperation in developing a new standard in disaster debris removal that was created in the wake of the devastating Angora wildfire that erupted on June 24, 2007. Chair Brown also participated in a ceremonial tree planting on the grounds of the first home rebuilt only 9 months following the incident. Read the Chair's remarks.

Santa Cruz Island Cleanup: Thanks to a partnership of public and nonprofit organizations, a precious jewel of California's coast is being restored to its natural habitat. This week, a major cleanup project on Santa Cruz Island is being completed, accelerating an ambitious restoration project led by The Nature Conservancy and supported by the National Park Service and the California Integrated Waste Management Board. National Tire Safety Week: Chair Margo Reid Brown kicks-off National Tire Safety Week in San Francisco along with the Rubber Manufacturer's Association, AAA of Northern California, Chevron and the City of San Francisco. Time for the Great American Clean Up! Chair Margo Reid Brown participated in the national kickoff of the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup. The event took place at the historic Old Town Sacramento Railroad Museum. Huell Howser played emcee for the event as the guest speakers delivered remarks in the tradition of a "whistle stop tour" on the platform of a railway car. Big Check for Big Effort: Board Member Rosalie Mulé has been making the rounds to present "big" checks to local jurisdictions that have received grants from the Integrated Waste Management Board. In March member Mulé visited City of Solana Beach, City of Moreno Valley and, pictured here, the City of Encinitas. These presentations have provided a great venue for the Board to get feedback from our grantees and build stronger relationships with our local partners. Member Mulé has been an outstanding advocate for the CIWMB programs and mission.

The Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) recognizes five California businesses that have surpassed even the lofty accomplishments of other 2007 WRAP winners. These five California businesses are being awarded the honor of being recognized as this year's WRAP of the Year (WOTY) winners for their outstanding waste-cutting efforts to reduce nonhazardous waste and send less garbage to our landfills.

Recycle Plastic Grocery Bags
It will now be easier for consumers to recycle their plastic grocery bags. Most local grocery stores will be offering in-store recycling bins and reusable bags for purchase.

International Compost Awareness Week, May 6-12, 2007
Composting at home helps keep organic materials out of landfills, and offers many benefits to home gardeners. Backyard composting yields a rich soil amendment which can be used in gardens and landscaping, while saving homeowners money spent on purchasing soil conditioners and fertilizers.

In celebration of International Compost Awareness Week, an event was held at the Upper Valley Recycling and Disposal facility in St. Helena, to demonstrate the benefits of grape waste compost.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board was proud to be a part of Earth Day 2007 by participating in eRecycle events and Earth Day messages. From its humble beginnings in the United States in 1970, to presently being observed in 175 countries, Earth Day is the largest modern-day holiday in the world.

Wal-Mart and Sam's Club eRecycle Earth Day events provided easy and convenient drop-off locations for consumers to recycle their electronic waste.

National Tire Safety Week, April 23-28 2007
An initiative of the Be Tire Smart, Play Your PART program. The educational program aims to teach drivers about the importance of taking simple care and maintenance steps to keep tires safe and performing at optimal levels. More than 15,000 tire dealers, automobile and safety organizations across the country participated in National Tire Safety Week.

eRecycle Consumer Education Program Announced: March 1, 2007
Encouraging San Diego area residents to recycle their electronic waste or "e-waste", the California Integrated Waste Management Board announced a new eRecycle Consumer Education Program at E-World Recyclers in coordination with E-World Recyclers grand opening.

Thank You California! 50 Percent Reduction Achieved!
Californians have essentially cut our trash in half since 1989. We are throwing away less and reusing and recycling more than ever.
