Truckee
River Canyon by Mountain Bike or Road Bike
Ride Description: The first mile follows the Truckee River up stream on the paved bike trail.
Soon, a dirt trail starts where Hwy. 89 crosses the river near Alpine Meadows.
The first 2 miles of this next section are steep before it levels out on a ridge
overlooking the Truckee River Valley. Next, ride another mile to a resting spot
with a good view. The ride down is fun: steep, single track, switchbacks, and
creek crossings. The total mileage will be between 8 and 10 miles. Meet at the
bike and tennis shop located near the tennis courts at the front entrance of
Squaw Creek Resort. Bring helmet, sun screen, mosquito repellant, water, snacks,
and sunglasses.
Meet at the same time and place for an easier bike ride along the Truckee River bike
trail to Lake Tahoe and back. Visit this link for more info and a trail map:

Rentals: The Squaw Creek bike shop has plenty of bikes to rent during the week. You shouldn't
need to make reservations. Here are a few testimonial ride descriptions:

Truckee River Rafting (Must Preregister)
The trip is self-guided. It is 4.5 miles and usually lasts approximately
two hours
nonstop. Bring swimsuit, sunscreen, and snacks. The Truckee River Company will
provide rafts and gear. Cost: If we can enroll at least 15 participants, the cost would be $10.00 per
person instead of the regular $15.00 price. The starting point is located approximately
7 miles from the Squaw Creek Resort. Logistics: Squaw Creek is a "partner" with Squaw
Creek Resort. Additionally, if we register more than 10 participants, the Squaw Creek
Concierge Service will arrange transportation with the Truckee River Company.
For more information contact Stan Chau at (408) 299-6529
or Matt Fore at (831) 636-4035.
Horseback Riding (Must Prepay)
Come take in spectacular views of Squaw Valley and the surrounding
alpine scenery on horseback. The Squaw Valley Stables, located at 1525 Squaw Valley Rd, just two miles off Highway 89 between
Tahoe City and Truckee, has been a cornerstone of Squaw Valley activity for years: "We have all kinds of
horses...gentle horses for gentle people, spirited horses for spirited people,
and for those who don't like to ride, we have horses that don't like to be
ridden." Prepayment is required. You can pay by check or cash at the registration tables upon arrival
to the conference. A shuttle will be provided (at no cost) to transport us from the resort to the stables.
The meeting place information will be provided at conference. Plan to be ready to leave at 3:15 pm. Prizes will be awarded for horse
riding related activities. To prepare, you may want to study some horse anatomy, color breeds, and
general horse information. You may also think about some outrageous riding attire.
It might be fun to award a Best Riding Outfit. For more information contact Tammy Derby at
(916) 875-8573.
Golf
Tahoe City Golf Course, starting at 3:30. There are 4 tee times (16 people). Cost will be $30
(pays for your green fee and prizes). For
more information, contact Greg Pirie at (707) 253-4144 gpirie@co.napa.ca.us.
Please contact Greg ASAP to register.
Hike to the Five Lakes Basin
This is a moderate four-mile round trip hike to the Five Lakes Basin.
There is no cost. We will carpool to the trailhead, which is near Alpine Meadows. Bring
good hiking shoes/boots, water bottle, snack, hat, and sunscreen. You may also
want to bring a camera and binoculars for the awesome views along the way. For more information contact Marty Isom
at (707) 565-6568.
Other "self-directed" activities available:
- Tennis--The Resort at Squaw Creek has two on property tennis courts
available for $12 per hour court rental. Tennis rackets are available for a
$5 racket rental. The court has a beautiful view of the valley and is open
during daylight hours (you can also bring your own racket and balls).
- Gondola ride
- Inline skating (bring own skates and safety equipment)
- Board games (available at main desk for free)
- Other equipment available for rental--basketballs, ping-pong
