Ice Breaker Summary

The Ice Breaker Session at the 2002 CIWMB/LEA Conference was a success. Many of the attendees and their family members participated in the activities. This was a great opportunity to mingle in a less formal setting and get to know new CIWMB and LEA staff--not to mention it was a lot of fun!

How Trashy Are We?

Participants were asked two questions:

  • How many years have you been involved in the solid waste field?
  • How many total combined years do you think all participants have been in the solid waste field?

Thirty-five people responded and their combined number of years in solid waste was 375. Pete Bozek was the winner with a very close guess of 381.

Story Building

The participant objective, put together the wackiest possible headline using words cut out of magazines. Everyone had a blast reading the various, creative headlines that were formed. (Hostess: Rachel Morton)

Here are a few of the story headlines:

  • Naughty Canadian city doctor eats compost
  • Waste-to-energy hero digs six feet under mulch
  • Recycling egg waste together with banana ice cubes
  • The World’s perfect love story: Waste and Community

Bridge Builders

This activity was a follow-up to last year's bridge building exercise and was a nod to our theme "Building Stronger Bridges." The task was to complete a bridge before the hour was up; The challenge was to build a stronger bridge than last year. Several dedicated builders accomplished the job, including Rick Miller, master bridge engineer two years running! This year's bridge was built with fewer resources, more style and more strength than last year. (Hostess: Angela Basquez)

The Great Diversion

Participants tossed balls into 3 baskets, each assigned a different point value, and tried to get the highest score. Rhisa Hambleton won the most enthusiastic diversion tossing game and Keith Isozaki also won for highest score. (Hosts: Pete Oda & Stan Chau)

What Am I

Each participant were assigned an index card that specified a type of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The index card was then pinned to each participant's back (the type off PPE was not known to the individual). The goal was to ask other participants several questions relating to PPEs in an effort to figure out what PPE you were. (Host: Dmitri Smith)

Truth Or Lie

Participants had to write down two things about themselves, one lie and one truth. The object was to guess which was the truth and which was the lie. (Host: Rick Miller)

Thanks to everyone who hosted a session or assisted in other ways! Linda Wise welcomed participants into the Ice Breaker room. Erica Weber was a "floater" and Shiella Rivera took pictures of the attendees and activities.
