Packaging Waste Reduction

Wood

Pallets and wooden crates are widely used in shipping to move, stack, and store products. In 1993, 500 million new wood pallets were produced and it is estimated that an equal number were landfilled or otherwise disposed. Another 83 million pallets were received by pallet rebuilders for recycling. Overall, U.S. pallet makers consume half of all the hardwood and 10 percent of the total lumber used in this country annually.

Businesses can save money on purchase and disposal of these wood products as well as save valuable resources by keeping this material out of landfills and burn piles.
