Grasscycling Demonstration Project

Grasscycling at the State Capitol

Fountain Circle on the west side of California's state capitol was a demonstration ground for grasscycling. The area normally took more than two hours to mow with a conventional bagging mower, but now takes only 45 minutes. This was a cooperative effort among the CIWMB, Department of General Services (DGS), the Office of Buildings and Grounds (OBG), and the Toro Company. The initial demonstration was well received and DGS/OBG is now converting its entire fleet to mulching (grasscycling) mowers.

The CIWMB has worked closely with the University of California Cooperative Extension in the development of informational materials. Close cooperation with the California Landscape Contractors Association (who officially endorse grasscycling), the Northern California Turf and Landscape Council, and the Southern California Turfgrass Council has resulted in widespread interest and increasing conversion to this time, money, and landfill saving practice.
