Mojave Desert and Mountain Grasscycling Outreach Campaign

The CIWMB provided $10,000 to implement the 2000 Mojave Desert and Mountain Grasscycling Outreach Campaign. The CIWMB partnered with the Mojave Desert and Mountain Integrated Waste Management Authority (JPA) to develop a series of Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) to inform residents in the Mojave Desert and Mountain region of San Bernardino County about the benefits of grasscycling and to divert grass clippings and other yard trimmings from landfills. The goals of the outreach campaign were to:

  • Expose 70 percent of the households (90,000) to the needs and benefits of grasscycling.
  • Raise awareness among 10 percent of the households (12,800) to the needs and benefits of grasscycling.
  • Encourage and assist 5 percent of the households (6,400) to begin grasscycling.
  • Divert over 2,000 tons of grass clippings generated annually.

The PSA’s illustrated the benefits of grasscycling, backyard composting, vermicomposting, and water-efficient landscaping. Over 4400 thirty-second spots were aired on a variety of cable channels, including CNN, ESPN, USA, TBS, TNT, A&E, and Discovery. For more information on the campaign, call (916) 341-6586.
