Conversion Technology Forum: 2001

On May 3-4, 2001, the California Integrated Waste Management Board sponsored a 2-day forum--Conversion Technologies for Municipal Residuals--at the Sacramento Hilton. The forum explored whether technologies such as hydrolysis, gasification, and anaerobic digestion can divert postrecyclable organic materials and paper materials from landfills, and convert them into energy, ethanol, and other useful products.

Background Paper and Findings

The following links provide the forum's background paper and findings on barriers and recommendations, as well as the May 22-23, 2001 board agenda item seeking direction on this issue.

At its May 22-23 meeting, the CIWMB approved action in five areas:

  1. Establish an interagency working group.

  2. Plan follow-up workshops.

  3. Develop a budget change proposal for a grant program and life-cycle assessment research.

  4. Assist project applicants with the permitting process.

  5. Work with existing programs to ascertain and leverage available funding.

For more details, see Agenda Item 26 above.
