Landfills Studied

Phase I

This phase consists of a comprehensive inventory and assessment of 224 municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills that have accepted waste since October 9, 1993.

Phase II

This phase consists of a regulatory assessment of 53 MSW landfills (40 landfills selected from Phase I and 13 MSW landfills that closed prior to 1993). The assessment’s goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of current regulatory requirements in controlling environmental impacts over time and to recommend ways to improve the multimedia regulation of MSW landfills.

Landfills Not Addressed by Study

The Phase I final report contains a brief overview of another set of solid waste landfills that do not receive MSW, and advises readers that the study does not address environmental performance of these landfills.
