by Scott Walker and Bob Anderson

This paper provides and introductory overview to the important elements of engineering geology, providing assistance to Engineering Geologists who are new to the design elements of landfills.

“Municipal Solid Waste Landfills (landfills) are an extremely important and controversial part of the public infrastructure that depends on natural geologic conditions to function well. Therefore, engineering geology plays a key role, and is essential to ensure protection of public health and safety and the environment.”

The Overview discusses aspects of landfill siting, design, and construction, alternative earthen final covers, static and dynamic stability, environmental monitoring and control and closure and postclosure maintenance.
