This award is given to recognize an individual who has made a major impact to
the solid waste local enforcement agency (LEA) field by development of a special
or new program, involvement with educational activities, committees, workgroups,
permitting and enforcement activities, and other special achievement that
enhances the protection of public and environmental health principles through
the LEA/EA program.
Greg Pirie has contributed his extensive expertise to a
wide range of solid waste programs both locally and statewide. His hands-on,
practical approach to solving problems and addressing complex issues has made
him a valuable contributor and leader to LEA/EA programs throughout California.
Some of his accomplishments include:
- Attained better solid waste management and enforcement for the citizens
of California by participation on numerous CIWMB regulatory workgroups.
- Current President, California Environmental Health Association, (CEHA),
Redwood Chapter.
- Numerous accomplishments while on the Enforcement Advisory Council (EAC)
including but not limited to:
- Co-formed the Permit Toolbox Advisory Committee
- Inclusion of the Enforcement Program Plan as part of the Permit
Toolbox
- Initiated the review of the health impacts from compost facilities
- Worked with the California Conference Directors of Environmental
Health (CCDEH) Executive Director to craft the final language in AB 2159
on hearing panels
- Instituted the Ralph Hunter Memorial Award in 1999 as a tribute to
the memory and legacy of Mr. Ralph Hunter, Napa County Director, and
LEA.
- Developed and implemented Waste Tire Enforcement Program-2002.
- Developed and implemented Waste Tire Amnesty Program-2004.
- Secured solid waste grants for tire enforcement, amnesty and clean
up.
- Chair/Facilitator for the Bay Area LEA Roundtables since 1997.
- EAC member since 1997.
- EAC Chair-2002-2004.
- Permitted numerous solid waste facilities while working closely with
local planners and CIWMB permitting staff to ensure that environmentally
sound projects are developed.
- Reorganized the Napa County LEA program.
- Lead role for all Napa County LEA grant applications, annual budget
analysis and presentations to the County's Board of Supervisors.
Greg is a worthy recipient of the Ralph Hunter Memorial Award. Please
