California Integrated Waste Management Board

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Stewardship

Agenda: Nov. 14, 2007 Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on Extended Producer Responsibility Framework

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) generally refers to a policy that seeks to shift the responsibility for the end-of-life (EOL) management of discarded products and materials from local government to primarily private product manufacturers, thereby incorporating the costs of product collection, recycling, and/or disposal into product price, and encouraging product design, source reduction, and reuse so as to have a reduced impact on human health and the environment.

Workshop Purpose

A public stakeholder consultation workshop was held on Nov. 14, 2007 to obtain suggestions for refining and improving the (EPR) Framework adopted at the Sept. 19, 2007 Board Meeting.

Please note that an overview of EPR and the Framework approach were covered in previous workshops and meetings. If these topics are new to you, it is important to review the background materials as provided in the invitation letter.
