Coordinator Update: Winter 2002

by Diana Rivera

Staff Changes in CalMAX

The daily pace of the CalMAX program is fast! The work requires close attention and constant maintenance of the database. New ads are arriving over the Internet hourly, and communication between our staff and users sending ads keeps us very busy. The business of running the program is an ongoing endeavor. Our workload—to our good fortune—is heavy, and it continues to increase.

It is with this workload in mind that we welcome Teri Wion as the new CalMAX team member. Teri comes to us from the California Integrated Waste Management Board's Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) where she has worked for the last year. Her knowledge and experience working with local government will be quite valuable in our CalMAX marketing efforts.

In this Issue

In the creative reuse feature, Sarah Weimer has researched another creative topic. Her article is about building birdhouses and a variety of home decorations out of discarded but reusable material.

We also feature an article about the University of California at Berkeley's reuse project. A few weeks ago, our staff had the opportunity to visit with the folks at UC Berkeley's new campus materials exchange. The materials provided by the program are free to all UC Berkeley students. For the many students who have limited budgets, this is certainly an excellent opportunity.

Next, from the electronics front, Terri Cronin explores the best methods of donating computer equipment. Her piece includes a list of organizations that accept working computers for donation.

Finally, the insert section consists of the reuse programs and resource information available throughout the state. We recommend that you save this insert and use it as a reference guide.

Friendly Reminder...
We want to hear from you! We always want to now how your materials exchanges are going! Our work is about networking, connecting people interested in reuse, and tracking the many exchanges that occur through CalMAX. If you make a connection, or an exchange through our program, we would appreciate a quick call or e-mail letting us know of your success.

P.S. All of us at CalMAX wish you     Happy New Year!
