CalMAX Update: Summer 1998

by Ken Decio, CalMAX Co-Coordinator

Match of the Year Winner

David K. West of Executive Suite, Chico, has been awarded the 1997 CalMAX "Match of the Year" by the California Integrated Waste Management Board for recovery of old computers and electronic scrap for reuse and repair. Using CalMAX since 1993, West estimates he recovers annually over 750 tons of computer and electronic equipment. West obtains mainframe computers for resale and recycling and collects circuit boards to recover precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. He also collects personal computers for donation to Northern California schools

David’s success shows how CalMAX assists businesses to obtain low-cost materials, to divert "waste" from landfills, and to provide schools with much needed computers to equip students for the electronic age. Congratulations David!

CalMAX thanks the following customers that were featured in the "Match of the Catalog" and "CalMAX Connections" articles in 1997:

  • Ron Kampschmidt of K&R Farming, Willows, CA
  • David Tress family of Kemstar Corporation, Los Angeles, CA
  • Dana Reid of Golden Era Productions, Gilman Hot Springs, CA
  • Warren Reed of Dow Jones and Company, Palo Alto, CA
  • Bobby Martin of MR Plastic Recycling, Ontario, CA
  • Jim Pope of Chemstar Urethanes Inc., Corona, CA

New Student Assistant

CalMAX extends thanks and bids farewell to long-time student assistant Beth Regula-Thompson. Beth has transferred to another position at the California Integrated Waste Management Board. Sarah White has replaced Beth as the new student assistant for CalMAX. Sarah is currently attending Consumnes River College/Sierra College and is majoring in English.

E-Mail Addresses

E-mail addresses will now be displayed in CalMAX listings instead of fax numbers. As we continue to receive more listings via the CalMAX Web site, it is apparent that e-mail addresses are becoming more important than fax numbers in helping CalMAX customers "connect" with one another to exchange materials. If you have an e-mail address, please include it on the Contact/Materials Listing Form in the catalog or on the appropriate line in the "Create Listings" section of the CalMAX Web site. E-mail addresses will make it more convenient and inexpensive for CalMAX customers to communicate. If you would like to have your FAX number also included in a listing, please insert your FAX number in the text of the listing.

CalMAX at Western Builder’s Show

CalMAX staff attended the Western Builder’'s Show at the Moscone Center in San Francisco on June 25-27. Staff displayed the CalMAX Web site and promoted reuse to thousands of participants attending the event. CalMAX would like to thank the following companies for supporting the Special Construction & Demolition Edition of the CalMAX catalog which was also distributed at the show:
