Coordinator Update: Summer 2002

The view from my window is extraordinary. I am lucky to have an office on the thirteenth floor, which has a great view of the north Sacramento Valley. The Sierras are to the east; to the west, the hills of the coastal range. This expansive view is my daily reminder that conducting outreach for the CalMAX program is a huge responsibility. California is so widespread, and our charge is to work with businesses and organizations throughout the State.

To those of you who are new to CalMAX—welcome. Your work in reuse and support of this material exchange program, is critical to meeting the objective of keeping material out of those landfills.

To those of you who continue to use CalMAX and share our flyers and catalogues with other businesses, we extend our sincere thanks. Your networking efforts always direct new businesses to the program-and of course that means more material is kept out of the landfills.

IN THIS ISSUE
In this issue's CalMAX Connection article, we feature the Computers for Classrooms program out of Chico, California. Since 1992, they have been refurbishing older computers for reuse in California classrooms. Last year alone, they refurbished more than 6,000 computers and gave them to students throughout the state.

We also feature a guest article from a company out of La Puente, California: Interior Removal Specialist, Inc., a company specializing in tenant improvement demolition work. They have donated nearly fifteen tons of reusable material to charity organizations.

In the creative reuse article, Sarah Weimer's section is titled "Shedding a Little Light on Reuse." There are many creative and fun ways to reuse old lamps, especially for those of you handy with a glue gun, and accustomed to working with household odds and ends.

From the Electronics Waste program, Terri Cronin writes about electronic equipment and energy efficiency, in support of the green building concept.

Finally, the insert section of the catalogue is about Green Building. What makes a building green? Is it in the structure, design, operation? Everything you need to know is in the insert section.

A Creative Reuse article in the Summer 2001 CalMAX catalogue, titled "Solar Cookers—What a Bright Idea!" on page 9, gave an incorrect phone number for Patricia Green, Information Exchange. The correct number is (305) 294-5786.
