Coordinator Update: Spring 2000

Spring, the Season of Change!

Since 1991 the California Integrated Waste Management Board has brought you the California Materials Exchange Program (CalMAX). Every season we continue to publish the CalMAX catalog and maintain the CalMAX Web site. With each issue we have introduced minor changes designed to help you search our listings. Now, as we bring you the spring issue, we would like to tell you about some changes that will enable you to find that perfect CalMAX connection.

On the Web, the most obvious difference is the CalMAX home page, where you will see a change in color and design. We have also revised the CalMAX guidleines in order to help you determine if CalMAX is the right venue for your materials. We encourage you to take a moment to review these guidelines when visitng the Web site.

New Regional Map
We have also modified the regional map. You can see the new map on page 10 of the catalog. If you are online, you can review the map on the Web site by selecting "Search Listings" then click on "regions" in the last sentence at the bottom of the page. When reviewing the regional map, you will notice that some of the regional boundaries have been redrawn; some counties have been moved into adjacent regions, and some regions have been divided into smaller geographic areas. For example, the previous area designated as Region 4 included counties as far north as Mendocino County, and as far south as Santa Clara County. This has now been divided into three regions (Regions 4, 5, and 7) to better address your transportation considerations. Another example of the region changes can be seen in the division of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Given the size and magnitude of listings in Los Angeles County, Orange County is now in a separate region, Region 14. Taking a moment to review the map will hopefully simplify your search efforts in the future.

Enhanced Table of Contents and Indexing Feature
At CalMAX, our goal is to respond to the needs of our users. To that end, we have enhanced the table of contents in our catalog so you can find the category that you are looking for in a more timely way. After reviewing the table of contents, take a look at our latest page-indexing feature designed to help you locate materials by referencing the top of the page for specific entries (i.e.: the yellow pages format).

In the Future and On the Web
With an eye toward the future, CalMAX also plans to introduce a key word and county search option to enhance your ability to locate materials within a specific county. We expect to have these features available in the next few months. Stay tuned.

Other Business Assistance Programs

Spring is a busy time not only for CalMAX, but for other CIWMB programs as well. Here are some upcoming events from other CIWMB business-related programs.

Recycled-Content Products Trade Show
CIWMB, in conjunction with the Department of General Services, is sponsoring the first annual Recycled Product Trade Show at the Sacramento Convention Center, 14th and J Streets, on May 10, 2000 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Recycled-content product suppliers and manufacturers will come together with buyers and procurement staff from State and local government agencies throughout California. More than 100 exhibitors and 1,000 attendees are expected!

What Can Vendors Get For $250.00?

• A 10 X 10 booth space, which includes a table, chairs, carpeting, sign, pipe and drape, and electricity.
• Free listing on the CIWMB and trade show Web sites.
• Contact with hundreds of State and local government buyers.
• Breakfast and lunch.

WRAP
The Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) is coming to your town! WRAP was originated in 1993 by CIWMB to recognize California businesses and nonprofit organizations for their accomplishments in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. Awards for WRAP are granted to reward resource-efficient operations that "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" and purchase recycled-content products. The annual application period is open from April 1 to June 30, 2000.

WRAP Winners will receive the following items:

• CIWMB Chairman letter of acknowledgement
• WRAP certificate
• Customized WRAP window decal
• Camera ready WRAP logo
• Sample news articles
• Press releases distributed by CIWMB to local and statewide media

Since 1993, more than 2,300 WRAP awards have been presented to California businesses. These businesses have saved money on avoided procurement and disposal costs by implementing resource-efficient practices and aggressive waste reduction, reuse, and recycling activities. All of the WRAP winners are listed on the WRAP Web site at www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WRAP/. So don’t delay, request your application today and join those environmentally conscious business owners in California, who have become recent WRAP winners.

Businesses can list their recycled-content products and buyers can find them on the CIWMB's Web site, www.cwimb.ca.gov/RCP/. For more information, see the article in the insert section, Buy Recycled Online.
