2002 Annual Report: Strategic Planning and Local Assistance
The Board’s strategic plan describes a significant shift from the Integrated Waste Management Act diversion goals to a broader, more systematic approach to managing the materials used and created in manufacturing. It identifies key areas such as sustainability, zero waste, product stewardship, and manufacturer responsibility that the Board will address over the next three to five years. The plan includes a strong commitment to environmental justice.
The Board’s implementation of the plan continues through the programs and activities described in the Annual Report. Additionally, the Board will review the plan’s implementation in a series of Board meetings throughout 2003 in order to make any necessary adjustments in priorities.
Providing assistance to local agencies-and, in some cases,to private businesses-to improve integrated waste management programs is a fundamental responsibility of the Board. Another responsibility is removing environmental threats from solid waste.
