Welcome from Margo Reid Brown, Board Chair

Board Member Margo Reid BrownHello and welcome to the California Integrated Waste Management Board website where you will find information on the many outstanding programs and issues regarding recycling, waste reduction and solid waste management as well as helpful tips and ideas on how you can become a steward of the environment and take a proactive approach to protecting California’s natural resources. As the new Chair for the Integrated Waste Management Board I look forward to providing you with even greater service and diverting even more valuable resources from California’s landfills.

Our mission at the Board is to reduce the resources that plague our landfills by promoting the management of all materials to their highest and best use, and protect public health and safety and the environment, in partnership with all Californians. We do this all through many programs and initiatives that help California’s 500-plus cities and counties achieve the ambitious 50 percent diversion goal.

I am truly excited that California has proven to be a leader among the nation in innovative programs such as the recently initiated electronic waste recycling program that has been successful in eliminating thousands of discarded televisions and computer monitors that are no longer able to be sent to our landfills. Through the efforts of this e-waste program we are able to build an infrastructure that will allow all Californians the ability to discard unwanted electronic wastes safely and conveniently.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board works with local jurisdictions and businesses to find ways to utilize resources that no longer can be reused or recycled and convert it into useful fuels and energy. We are looking at innovative technologies from businesses that help turn these resources into marketable items such as building and construction materials, agricultural materials or household items, demonstrating even further that, as Governor Schwarzenegger has often said, the environment and the economy can coexist and build a stronger California.

As we develop new programs and concepts for reaching California’s waste diversion goals we will keep our web pages updated so that the world will know of the great things happening in the Golden State. Thank you!
