2003 Annual Report: Strategic Planning and Local Assistance

Strategic Planning

In 2003, the Board heard a series of presentations as part of a comprehensive update on implementation of the 2001 Strategic Plan. Board members considered how each of the strategic goals was being implemented through CIWMB programs and activities. They then provided additional clarification and direction on expanding existing efforts or initiating new ones to further address the goals and overall mission of the Board. Key areas addressed in the update included sustainability, zero waste, product stewardship, and manufacturer responsibility, as well as public education and environmental justice.

Local Assistance

Providing assistance to local agencies-and, in some cases, to private businesses-to improve integrated waste management programs is a fundamental responsibility of the Board. Another responsibility is removing environmental threats from solid waste. In 2003, the Board provided $39 million to support local integrated waste management efforts through the grant programs listed below.
